Do Industrial Hand Sanitisers Provide Effective Protection Against COVID-19?

We have all heard government messaging about taking effective action against COVID-19. Particular advice has included social distancing, working from home, wearing face masks and gloves (in certain work settings), and washing hands regularly. In this article, Coler Medical PPE explores another weapon in the fight against COVID-19 as we explore does hand sanitiser kill COVID-19?

Hand sanitiser is a viable alternative to soap and water

Soap and water are well-known as a main method of fighting COVID-19. It has been recommended by Governments across the world as well as the World Health Organization.

In places where soap and water are not available, sanitiser is recommended as a viable alternative.

As well as being popular for cleaning hands, sanitiser can also be safely used on other parts of the body as well as on cleaning surfaces. The portability of hand sanitisers is a major advantage in that it ensures that disinfection is available on the move and in particular is suited to use in cars and in remote working.

The UK Government has published official advice about combatting COVID-19 in their “Coronavirus (COVID-19): working safely” advice. In the “Cleaning, hygiene and handwashing to reduce coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission” section the advice is:

UK Health & Safety Executive advice about the use of hand sanitisers

The UK Health & Safety Executive recommends the use of hand sanitiser protection as an alternative to using soap and water. Here is a quote from their website:

Hand sanitisers are an alternative to using soap and water to wash your hands. Employers may choose to provide hand sanitiser and surface disinfectants for their workers or others to use during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Hand sanitisers and surface disinfectants are biocidal products. They are regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).”

Types of hand sanitisers available

Hand sanitiser is available in many consistencies including foam, gel, liquid, and spray (mist). The consistency is relatively unimportant, what really matters is that the sanitiser kills viruses and bacteria upon contact. This is vital to prevent infections and mutations of the virus from emerging. MIST-IFY instant sanitiser from Coler Medical PPE is a perfect choice and is available in a range of convenient hand sanitiser units.

Other best practices for hand hygiene

Although hand sanitiser protection against COVID-19 is proven it is also essential that good hand hygiene is practised too. This includes:

  • After using the bathroom, handshaking, coughing/sneezing, public items (ATMs, buttons, doors, handrails, phones, etc,), changing nappies, and using public transport
  • Before eating or drinking, handling of raw foods (e.g., eggs, fish, meat, poultry, and other products)

Practising the above will help to protect against COVID-19 as well as many other bacteria and viruses (e.g., e-Coli, Influenza, etc.)
